Can You Reuse Your Airbag Module After a Crash?
After a collision, one of the most common questions drivers and repair shops ask is simple: do I have to buy a brand-new airbag module, or can I reuse the one already in my vehicle? In the large majority of cases, the answer is that your original module can be reused once its stored crash data is cleared. Here is how it works.
What happens to the airbag module in a crash
When your vehicle detects an impact, the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) control module permanently records crash data in its internal memory and often enters a "locked" state. After that, the airbag warning light stays on, and a scan tool typically shows codes like "crash data stored," "crash event recorded," or "control module locked." The module will not arm the airbags again until that data is cleared.
Reuse vs. replace: what most people don't realize
Dealerships almost always recommend replacing the module outright, which is expensive and often involves programming. But the module hardware itself is usually undamaged — it is the stored data, not the electronics, that prevents it from working. Clearing that data through a proper airbag module reset restores the module to its original factory (pre-crash) condition, so you can reinstall your own unit instead of paying for a new one.
When you genuinely need a replacement
There are a few cases where a reset is not enough: physical damage to the module housing or connector, water/fire damage, or a module that no longer powers on or communicates at all. If your airbag light came on without any accident, the cause may be a separate fault (a clock spring, seat sensor, or wiring issue) — get the system scanned first so you are fixing the right thing.
How the reset works
- Order the reset for your vehicle make and remove the airbag module (locations vary by model).
- Mail it in — we clear the crash data at the memory level and restore factory settings.
- We bench-test the module and ship it back ready to reinstall. No dealer programming required.
